I always knew that religious orders like the Franciscans, Benedictines and Dominicans were alive and well,… Their home is a priory (priests, brothers, deacons), a monastery (nuns), or a convent (sisters). This numbered ordering fell into disuse because for some, it seemed to indicate a “ranking” which was not accurately expressive of the Dominican Family. Against this background and drawing from this inspiration, the Third Order “new style” ought formally to be seen as an apostolic lay movement. Third Orders are comprised of lay men and women who are formally associated with a religious order such as the Benedictines, Augustinians, Carmelites, Dominicans, Franciscans, Mercedarians, Norbertines, Servites, Marists, and Trinitarians and who may or may not live in community (Third Order Regular versus Third Order Secular). Dominicans . Because they belonged to the Third Order, members were often called Tertiaries. They have also been known through history as Third Order Dominicans and Dominican Tertiaries.
